Battlefield Tours

Zulu War Battlefields.
In the late 19th Century the British Army was embroiled in two influential wars; first against the Zulu nation and second against the Boers. A visit to the famous sites from the Zulu Wars, the scene where 12 Victoria Crosses were earned in one night, is highly recommended; by listening to the brilliantly detailed stories, told on the actual site by raconteurs of note, one can gain a fascinating insight and perspective into what helped fashion the South Africa of today.

Memorial at IsandlwanaIsandlwana

Take an opportunity to stay at the award winning Lodge at Fugitives Drift, the home of Nicky and the late David Rattray; join the flagship tours to Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift that are led by registered tour guides Rob Caskie, Joseph Ndima and George Irwin. These superb storytellers make the history of that day come alive offering some unique Zulu perspectives. Nothing can prepare you for the intensity of emotions felt as the battlefield tales unravel; you will feel you have lived through each one.

In addition to the battlefield tours, activities include walks, horse rides through the reserve to view abundant wildlife and fishing on the 20km frontage on the Buffalo River. There is also the recently completed Harford Library that is perched over the Buffalo River with superb views. Enjoy this library full of memorabilia or relax by the swimming pool in the surrounding gardens. Fugitives Drift embodies the Rattrays deep love of South Africa, its people and its unique history.

You can choose to stay either in the Lodge or the Guest House; both offer spacious, luxury en-suite cottages with private verandahs and broad views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The Lodge and Guest House both have swimming pools, set in colourful well established gardens, home to innumerable bird species.

The Battlefield tours are a MUST for anyone visiting the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Boer Wars.
"It could be said that you have little chance of understanding modern South Africa and South Africans if you have no understanding of the Anglo-Boer War".

Similar to the Anglo Zulu wars one can best learn on site about the 2nd Anglo-Boer War (1899 1902) and its history with the Battle of Spioenkop being the focal point. There are several options of Battlefield tours from which you can choose, including the battle of Colenso & Churchills capture.

Three Trees Hill

Outposts Ltd recommends staying at Three Trees Hill, a family run lodge, started by the late David Rattray and Andrew Ardington, now run by Simon and Cheryl Blackburn, highly experienced safari guides. It is beautifully appointed and stands overlooking the secluded valley of the Spioenkop Game Reserve with free range rhinos.

It is a great location for families, with riding, San rock art, guided hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains and a bracing pool to enjoy if you are not so keen on the Battles.
